Winter Container Trucking on I-5: What Oregon and Washington Shippers Should Know
Most container deliveries in the Pacific Northwest run on I-5, and winter changes that drive. Rain, valley fog and snow and ice on the southern Oregon passes can all slow a delivery. Here's how to plan.
Where winter matters most
- Southern Oregon. South of Roseburg, I-5 crosses several passes on the way to Medford, where snow and chain requirements can show up quickly. ODOT's TripCheck site shows current conditions.
- The Willamette Valley. Dense fog can slow traffic between Salem and Eugene.
- Puget Sound. Rain makes heavy traffic worse around Tacoma and Seattle.
How to plan
- Book early in the free-time window, so a weather day doesn't push you into extra charges.
- Build some flexibility into dock appointments for Roseburg and Medford deliveries.
- Make sure there's a contact on site who can reschedule if needed.
Our approach
Safety comes first. If conditions are unsafe, we'll call you, explain what's happening and reschedule. We won't put your freight or other drivers at risk to meet a deadline.
